Here are some of the key features of electric and hybrid vehicles.
Full Hybrid
Petrol or diesel with regenerative braking – recovers wasted energy when braking
Allows engine downsizing and 1‐2 miles pure electric mode at low speeds
No requirement to plug the vehicle in
Plug-in Hybrid
Like a full hybrid but bigger batteries and an on board charger so can be plugged in
Can significantly reduce fuel costs if plugged in regularly and used for short journeys.
Can travel up to 40 miles in pure EV mode
Pure Electric
Run solely on electricity, so must be charged from an electric charge point!
Range typically limited to 100 – 150 miles, but newer vehicles can do >250 miles

Here are some common questions about electric vehicles.
Are electric cars more expensive to service?
No, in fact electric cars generally work out cheaper to service and maintain than traditional combustion engine vehicles. This is mainly because they have fewer moving parts.

How does an electric car affect my Company Car Tax?
An Electric car affects your Company Car Tax in a significant way. The 0% BIK rate applies to cars with 0 emissions and from April 2020 the 0% rate will also apply to cars with emissions from 1 – 50g/kg and which have an electric mile range of 130 miles or more. Both will increase to only 1% BIK in 2021/22 and only 2% BIK in 2022/23. This compares to a 37% BIK rate at the opposite end of the emissions scale.
You can see how your Company Car Tax Band can be changed significantly by choosing full Electric or Hybrid cars. Examples of 0 emission cars would be Electric Mustang, Tesla Model 3 and the BMW 330e
Where can I charge my electric car?
Most electric cars can be charged from a standard domestic electrical outlet. However, you can have a dedicated home charge point installed which can help decrease the amount of time required to charge your vehicle.
If you're out and about, there's also an ever-growing network of charging points available which you may use on a pay-as-you-go basis or through an account.
How far can I travel on one full charge?
This depends on many factors such as driving style, speed and weather conditions, but typically modern electric cars have a range of around 200 miles. However, this varies from car to car.
Is the BiK rate different for PHEVs and hybrids?
Plug – in and other Hybrid Cars incur Company Car Tax (BIK) and is calculated in the same way as all other cars. However, from the 2020/21 financial year onwards, the cost will depend on how far they can be driven in electric mode, as well as their CO2 emissions.
There are many popular Plug-In and Hybrid Cars that can cover between 30 and 39 miles on electric power alone, their drivers will pay a BIK at 10%. Those that can go even further (40-49 miles) will see the rate fall to 6%. Either way it is far less than the 20% - 37% that apply to petrol and Diesel cars.
