Mistakes when preparing their cars for the winter weather

Dec 12, 2022

Experts have warned of some of the mistakes drivers make when preparing their cars for the winter weather. There is an oversight many drivers forget about before taking to the roads.

There are many drivers who do their bit to try and stay safe during the winter months, however, some experts say that one of the common mistakes made by motorists is related to their screenwash dilution.

Everybody should be reminded that your windscreen washer fluid is extremely important. Lots of drivers do keep their washer fluid well topped up. Some drivers may forget that the dilution ratio needs to change dependant on the time of the year.

Too much water could end up freezing on your windscreen and in your washer system, as the ratios of dilution are different from the summer. The best advise is to follow the dilution instructions on the screenwash bottle to prevent freezing, however, as a rule of thumb, just make sure the the dilution is much more concentrated during the winter period.

Other important things to check include your tyre pressures on a regular basis and your wiper blades should also be checked for any breaks or tears on the rubber. Avoid where possible using your blades for clearing snow and ice from your windscreen as this is a sure way to tear your wiper blades. Use a scraper to clear the screen and also avoid using boiling water directly on the screen which has a high chance of cracking the glass. Instead, try using your heater to defrost from the inside or use a de-icer or scraper.

It could also be worth preparing yourself an SOS kit just in case something happens whilst you are out with your car. Recommendations would be to keep these things handy in the boot including - Hi Vis Jackets, Blankets, a shovel, a portable charger, a tow rope and towing eye.
