Special Cameras To Catch Motorists Using Mobile Phones!

Trials of advanced camera systems designed to identify drivers who neglect to wear seatbelts or engage in mobile phone use while driving are set to undergo further expansion.

This innovative technology captures video footage of passing motorists, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to assess whether drivers may be utilizing handheld mobile phones or neglecting to wear seatbelts. Subsequently, the processed images are forwarded to the police for evaluation and potential action.

Violations such as not wearing a seatbelt can result in fines of up to £500, accompanied by penalty points. Similarly, using a mobile phone while driving can lead to fines of up to £1,000 and six penalty points.

The initial trial of this technology commenced in 2021 with National Highways, and in 2022, Devon and Cornwall Police implemented the system. During the initial weeks of deployment, nearly 600 individuals were apprehended by the police for not wearing seatbelts on roads in Devon and Cornwall. Specifically, the cameras identified 590 instances of individuals not wearing seatbelts and 40 cases of drivers using mobile phones.

In collaboration with AECOM, this research initiative is now expanding to involve additional police forces. The objective is to gain insights into the functionality of the technology on National Highways roads and potentially pave the way for a nationwide implementation.

The ten police forces participating in the extended trial include Durham, Greater Manchester Police, Humberside, Staffordshire, West Mercia, Northamptonshire, Wiltshire, Norfolk, Thames Valley Police, and Sussex.

Matt Staton, Head of National Road User Safety Delivery at National Highways, emphasized the importance of addressing distracted driving and seatbelt non-compliance, citing their significant roles in accidents leading to fatalities or serious injuries. The collaboration with law enforcement aims to curb dangerous driving behaviours, and the deployment of technology is envisioned to prompt drivers to seriously reconsider their actions behind the wheel.
